Career & College Planning

At Wheatland Union High School we believe that Career Planning should be the number 1 priority of our students. While most of our students will go on to some sort of Post-Secondary Training (Trade School, Colleges, Universities), EVERY SINGLE ONE OF OUR STUDENTS WILL SOMEDAY HAVE A CAREER. We work individually with EVERY student to customize their Skills-Based Education Plan so that they can acquire the career that they want in order to live the life that they have identified as the life they want to live. We are are not a "Career OR College" preparation school. We are a "Career AND College" preparation school.

Pirate Focus "Get Focused Stay Focused" Classes

Wheatland Union High School is a Get Focused Stay Focused (GFSF) School. Every freshman is assigned to "Pirate Focus", a life planning and career exploration class that shows students how to create a 10 Year Plan for Life Success. The class is highly relational and especially individualized to each student from all walks of life. We also have Upper-Class sections of this course for students who transfer to us after their freshman year or are in need of credit recovery.

Our teachers attend in-depth training to assist the students in the 10-Year Plan process. Students revisit their plans in their 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade social science courses for the opportunity to review, revisit and revise their plans. Counselors assist students in their academic plans based on the student's own individual career goals as set in the GFSF process. Our CTE & College Readiness Center offers one-on-one support for students as they revise their plans and reset their goals.

WUHS is a 3-year recipient of the Gold Medal Award for GFSF Implementation from Academic Innovations and has been highlighted as a "Best Practices School" at Academic Innovations and GFSF Conferences since 2020.

More information about our Pirate Focus class and GFSF can be found HERE.

Community College Applications

The California Community College system uses "Open CCC" as a system for applying to all CA Community Colleges. Once a student is registered with Open CCC, they can then apply to any CA Community College. To apply, visit any Community College Web site and click their "Apply Now" button. The system will automatically walk you through the Open CCC process and issue you an Open CC ID number, then redirect you back to the specific Community College page and the application for that school (where you will receive a Student ID# for that particular school). Once registered for a particular school, you can then register for classes. You may attend classes at more than one Community College at a time.

You can also access the Open CC Application by Clicking Here and then clicking on "Enroll Now" in the menu at the top of the page.

SAT & ACT

As of January 2022, the University of California and California State University systems will not consider SAT or ACT scores for admissions purposes. Students may, however, submit scores to be used for placement purposes. Private and out-of-state colleges may still require these exams for admission. Be sure to check with individual universities to find their current requirements. In addition, some scholarships may also still require SAT or ACT scores for application.

How To Afford College

FAFSA

What is the FAFSA?

The term "Financial Aid" refers to a number of different ways in which a student can acquire funding for higher education.

Grants: Need-based. Usually granted based on level of income and may come from the Federal Government, the State in which you are attending school, or from the individual school. The amount may vary from year to year based on the family's financial status.

Loans: Need-based and MUST be paid back.

Work-Study Programs: or Self-Help. The student will work part-time on campus and the employer will contribute to the cost of Tuition, book, or living expenses.

Scholarship: Merit-based, some are 1-time and some are renewable for multiple years. Merit = achievement. May be based on GPA or Community Involvement. Some are granted based on attributes or life situations.
