Four Ways to Get College Credit in High School

Students at WUHS who maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher are eligible to enroll in local community colleges and participate in our Early College Access program. WUHS is dedicated to finding as many ways as we can for students to earn college credit. Students who are interested in working towards an Associates Degree while in high school should consider joining our Pirates at SEA Program (see more information under “Special Programs”). There are 4 NOW 5 ways that students can earn college credit while in high school:

NOW FIVE WAYS!!!

WUHS has just been approved as a CLEP Testing Center!

The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) helps you receive college credit for what you already know, for a fraction of the cost of a college course. CLEP offers 34 exams that cover introductory-level college course material. With a passing score on one CLEP exam, you could earn three or more college credits at 2,900 U.S. colleges and universities.

Save Money: Exams cost only $93 plus your test center's administration fee, compared to hundreds of dollars per course credit at a college.

Get Your Degree Faster: Students who pass CLEP exams are likely to graduate months earlier than other students.

Interesting facts:

  • CLEP students tend to have higher GPAs.

  • CLEP students perform as well or better in subsequent courses than their peers who take the introductory course.

  • CLEP students who score 50 or higher on an exam have higher rates of transfer from two-year to four-year colleges.

  • CLEP is the most widely trusted credit-by-examination program, accepted at over 2,900 colleges.

34 Subjects include: American Government, History of the United States I: Early Colonization to 1877, History of the US: 1865 to Present, Human Growth and Development, Introduction to Educational Psychology, Introductory Psychology, Introductory Sociology, Principles of Macroeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics, Social Science and History, Western Civilization I: Ancient Near East to 1648, Western Civilization II: 1648 to the Present, American Literature, Analyzing and Interpreting Literature, College Composition, Colledge Composition Modular, English Literature, Humanities, Biology, Precalculus, Calculus, Chemistry, College Algebra, College Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Financial Accounting, Information Systems, Introductory Business Law, Principles of Management, Principles of Marketing, French Language: Levels 1 and 2; German Language: Levels 1 and 2; Spanish Language: Levels 1 and 2; Spanish with Writing: Levels 1 and 2.

Currently, we are limited to only testing our students, but we have applied to be a public testing site for the community as well. For more information or to register for a CLEP test, contact Josh Crawley at 530-633-3100 x236 in the Tutoring/Testing Center.

AP (Advanced Placement)

  • Traditional way for student to earn college credit through a final exam.

  • High School Class at a high level of rigor

  • Prepares students for college level rigor

  • Provides a GPA Boost/Bump

  • Colleges look at final exam scores (4 or 5, maybe 3). About 58% of public colleges give credit for a score of 3; meanwhile, only 33% of private colleges accept this score.

  • Exam costs up to $95 each, reduced rates are sometimes available for qualifying students.

  • A student could pass the class with an A or B and receive a “grade bump” on their transcript, but still need to re-take the course at a college based on a lower AP final exam score.

AP Courses at WUHS include:

  • AP Calculus AB (10th-12th grades)

  • Student can get the GPA bump for courses that are DE and held at WUHS as if it was an “AP” course

  • Students sign agreement at beginning of year

  • Students wishing to drop a DE class must drop BEFORE the YCC drop date, otherwise a failing grade may be issued.

  • Failing or a low grade a DE course could effect a student’s ability to receive financial aid after high school

Process for Acquiring College Credit

The first time that you are taking a College Course you will need to "Apply for College". The Academic Technicians in the CTE/C Center are Pros at helping with this! In order to start the application process, you will need your Social Security Number. If you do NOT have your number in this process, you will have to physically go to the Yuba College campus to acquire your new Yuba College Student ID number. If you have your SSN in the process, your Student ID will be emailed to you.

  1. Go to the Yuba Community College website. Click Here!

  2. Click the Apply button.

  3. If this is your first time applying for community college, you will be directed to begin the application process for "Open CCC". This is a system that allows you to apply to all community colleges in California. You will be given an Open CCC Number - you will need this every time that you apply for any community college. You will need your SSN in this process.

  4. Once you have completed the Open CCC process you will be directed to apply for Yuba Community College.

  5. Upon completing the Yuba College Application, you will receive an email with your Yuba College Student ID#. This number will begin with the first letter of your last name and be followed by 7 digits. YOU WILL NEED TO KEEP THIS NUMBER HANDY FOR ALL CLASS PAPERWORK IN THE FUTURE!

  6. Complete the appropriate paperwork and turn it into the CTE/C Center.

Students who are highly intrinsically motivated are capable of earning an Associate's Degree or Associate's Degree for transfer by the time they graduate from high school.

College credit earned can be transferred to most colleges that students may elect to attend after high school.
