Description: In comparison with English II-P, this course will be faster-paced and will delve more deeply into written and spoken language. A strong emphasis will be placed on higher-level thinking skills, literary and rhetorical analysis, and composition writing. Students considering this course should be proficient readers and have a strong base of knowledge in grammar and mechanics. Because the college system recognizes the increased degree of difficulty, this course is calculated on a 5-point scale rather than the usual 4-point scale for calculation of students’ GPA. Curriculum follows California Common Core State Standards

Description: This course explores the question, "What does it mean to face conflict?" It looks at literature featuring ordinary people who find themselves in circumstances that require extraordinary acts, and examines these acts in relation to the archetypal hero's journey and personal growth. Lessons provide historical background on the setting and author while offering discussion points students can use to explore literary topics with family and peers. The course includes the use of novels, new vocabulary, observations about characters, settings and literary technique, etc. Students develop a wide range of composition skills throughout the course be exploring techniques and formats such as informational essays, first person writing, figurative language, summarizing, persuasive writing, inferential reading and contextual clues.

English III: Victorian Monstrosity

Description: Although the term "monstrosity" connotes fear d repulsion, many nineteenth-century writers were compelled by the idea of attraction between humans and not-quite human creatures such as demons, vampires, goblins, and ghosts. In exploring the aesthetic, political, economic, historical, and racial(izd) dimensions of these enchanted literary liaisons, we will consider their relationship to contemporary political debates over science, empire, immigration, masculinity, and the status of women.

Description: This course is designed to produce an annual record of events that occurred during the entire school year. The functions of a class member include ad sales, publication terminology, yearbook sales, layout design, photography, interview techniques, story reporting, story writing, editing for content, editing for type font, and proofreading copy. Also required are input into cover and theme development, index log updates, extensive interaction with the public, and ability to work in a group. This course will fulfill one year of elective credits toward high school graduation.
