CTE Public Services

We have been awarded a SWPK12 Grant of just over $900,000 to begin this pathway on the WUHS Campus!

This brand new pathway will be available to students in the 2023-2024 school year. In an agreement with and taught by Yuba College Instructors, the first year of this course includes a semester of “Introduction to Public Services” and a semester of “Introduction to Dispatch”. In the second year, students can choose between 2 Capstones: Administration of Justice (AJ-10 and AJ-15 as part of the AJ Police Academy) or Wildland Firefighting (full certification to work with Cal-FIRE upon high school graduation). All courses are worth college credit.

Description: A comprehensive career and life planning course. Students complete the course with a 10-Year Plan for success, a Skills-Based Education Plan, the beginning of a Professional Portfolio, and a sense of relevance for their high school courses. In the context of a study of the changes that occur during a typical life span, each student will construct a personal profile of current and projected interests, aptitudes, skills, values, personality, and life and personal circumstances.

The following courses are not part of a Pathway but are CTE courses offered under the sponsorship of Yuba Community College.

These courses are Yuba Community College Courses taught by Yuba Community College Instructors. Students wishing to participate in this program must be willing to commit to producing college-level work and maintain the highest level of professionalism throughout the course. There will be a rigorous level of homework and class participation expected.

DE Intro to Public Services & Dispatch - Year I

Description: Official Description under development with Yuba College. This course is designed to introduce students to the variety of Public Services careers available within the industry including Administration of Justice, Firefighting, and Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedics and more. Students will learn the primary responsibilities of each agency, how the agencies work together and how 911 dispatch works to connect them all. Students will learn basic policy, procedure and dispatch codes

DE AJ-10 - Introduction to Administration of Justice

Description: (as per Yuba College Catalog) Overview of the history and philosophy of the U.S. justice system; study of the modern criminal justice system and its components, law enforcement, courts, and corrections; identifying the roles of the various professionals within the system and their interrelationships; analysis of legal issues; study of theories of crime causation, punishment, and rehabilitation.

DE AJ-15 - Criminal Investigation

Description: (as per Yuba College Catalog) Addresses procedures and concepts as applied to criminal investigations, including surveillance; crime scene response management; and identification, collection, and processing of physical evidence. Covers U.S. Constitution and Statutory/Case Law; interview/interrogation processes and techniques; identifying information sources; procuring search warrants; serving search warrants; exceptions to the search warrant rule; and court processes. Emphasis is placed on developing the student’s capacity to analyze specific situations and identify sound ethical investigative procedures.

Public Services Pathway Year 2 - Option B
Wildland Firefighter

Students pursuing this option will be eligible to work for Cal-FIRE at the age of 18 years old.

Description: (as per Yuba College Catalog) This course provides the skills and knowledge needed for the entry-level firefighter to perform his/her duties safely, effectively, and competently. The curriculum is based on CAL FIRE policy, the 2013 edition of NFPA 1001 Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications, the 2012 edition of NFPA 1051 Standard for Wildland Firefighter Professional Qualifications, and the 2008 edition of NFPA 472 Standard for Competence of responders to Hazardous Materials/ Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents. Grades are P/NP Only.

DE Hazardous Materials - FRO/DECON
Grades: 12
Prerequisites: Completion of DE Intro to Public Services & Dispatch with a "C" or better

Description: (as per Yuba College Catalog) Designed primarily for First Responders who are at risk of exposure to toxic substances. Covers type, nature, and physiological effects of hazardous materials. Designed to develop new First Responder attitudes toward health and safety and to increase safe behaviors in responding to hazardous material incidents. Upon completion of the course, students will receive certification from the California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI) in FRO and FRO-Decontamination. (L,M,C) Grades are P/NP Only.

DE Public Safety First Aid and CPR
Grades: 12

Description: (as per Yuba College Catalog) This course fulfills the California State Title 22 requirements designed to give the entry level rescuer/firefighter, peace officer and lifeguard training in First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED. The course includes training in the following areas: CPR, AED, patient assessment, splinting, bleeding control, bandaging, airway management, shock treatment, medical emergencies, trauma emergencies, infectious disease control, and emergency childbirth. (L) Grades are P/NP Only.

These courses are Yuba Community College Courses taught by Yuba Community College Instructors.
