Why Apple in Education?

Mac Folklore: Mac Heads will enjoy Mac Folk Lore, devoted to collective historical storytelling about the Mac, with sets of related stories describing events from multiple perspectives, as groups of people recount their shared history through interlinked anecdotes.

MacSetup: This page discusses common Internet and network topics, including how to connect to the Internet, how to troubleshoot your Internet connection, and how to set up a small network in OS X.

Mac Beep Codes: Modern day Macs no longer issue the dreaded "Chimes of Doom" when they fail to pass their hardware startup tests. Instead, they beep. But, they'll beep differently depending on the problem encountered and the Mac model.

MacClassic Troubleshooting provides information for troubleshooting situations that cause the Classic environment not to start up, to quit unexpectedly, or to stop responding ("freeze").

Mac Network Tools: Have you ever wondered how to get the Macintosh to help you diagnose network trouble? TCP/IP troubles? Appletalk problems?  You need diagnostic tools that give you the data about your environment.

Tips and Tricks: Brain droppings on various Macintosh issues.

Check out COCOA's OmniGraffle software made exclusively for OS X. It will help you keep a graphical map of your labs and networks (see example).

OS X.2 and You

If you are a teacher who has already purchased for yourself a copy of OS X.2, you can receive $69 off on your next Apple Store for Education online purchase by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE and identifying this issue.

bulletTake steps to actively plan a smooth migration to Mac OS X, or learn ways to better maintain your existing Mac OS X infrastructure. Now, in one robust and interactive site, you can learn about and discuss Mac OS X installation, deployment, and maintenance in your school.
http://www.apple.com/education/technicalresources
bulletPlease pay special attention to the OS X.2 System requirements given at http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/requirements.html before loading OS X.2 on any computer.
bulletIf you are planning to put a copy of OS X.2 on an older Apple computer (i.e. - pre-iMac), you may even want to go to Apple's Knowledge Base at http://www.info.apple.com and see what Apple says about your specific computer and OS X.2. When you get to info.apple.com, simply type in the search field the type of computer you have and "OS X" (i.e. - Power Mac G3 All-in-One and OS X) and any related technical articles will come up. Doing this, for example, would tell you that when you put OS X on a Power Mac G3 All-in-One you lose the use of the floppy drive (Article #106234) and the volume buttons (Article #106152).

Mac OS X for Education - Get Panther

With Mac OS X, educators can be assured that teachers and students will be able to focus on teaching and learning, not on maintaining the technology. Mac OS X has WAY less virus trouble and is more stable than Windows.

Here are 10 reasons why Apple believes Mac OS X is the best choice for education (and home):
