PRIDE (Powerful Reading Intervention Developing Excellence) is a successful reading program based on an accelerated model in which low achieving students progress to grade level and beyond.

Students are selected based upon:

bulletSAT-9 scores
bulletAn informal "Reading Inventory"
bulletFluency needs and goals
bulletWord recognition issues
bulletClass placement

The program is designed to be:

bulletAccelerated
bulletIndividualized
bulletSkills based

Books are selected based upon:

bulletVariety of vocabulary levels
bulletPlot complexities
bulletCurrent literature
bulletAge appropriate book themes
bulletAccountability

Assessments are given three times per year (initial, mid-year, and end-of-year) to drive the curriculum based on the individual needs of the students!!

About the Advisor

Sue Sterling received her M.A. with a specialization in reading in 1983.  She has been a teacher for over 27 years.  Mrs. Sterling has taught all grades and ages.  In 1997, she wrote and managed a grant for a reading program at three secondary schools in Northern California.   WUHS was fortunate in 2000 to hire Mrs. Sterling to create and implement the P.R.I.D.E. program.  She now serves as an advisor to Chasity Raybuck.
