2009 Wheatland High School FFA Fair ResultsWheatland High School FFA members had a great run at the Yuba Sutter Fair this past summer. The following Ag Mechanics students sold their projects at the beginning of the junior livestock auction on August 1st: Bridget McClarrinon sold an all terrain trailer for $950, Michael Bradshaw sold a combination picnic table and bench set for $450, Trevor Haskell sold a renovated 1952 Farmall Super C tractor for $2700 (Jackson Whitley also helped Trevor on this renovation), Garrett McAdams sold an ATV drag scraper for $325, and John Giles was representing the WHS Design/Build team when he sold their competiton building from this years contest for $1300 (many other students were involved in this project. The money raised from this sale will go directly into the upcoming years practice building cost of materials). Although the sale amounts were a bit lower than expected, all persons who bought one of the students projects got a quality item. Wheatland High School wood and metal shop students who are involved in the local FFA chapter are eligible to sell their projects at the Yuba Sutter Fair if judged to be a quality project. Exhibitors must also complete the FFA record book and have the official FFA show uniform for the competition. These FFA members would like to thank their buyers for supporting them. This years buyers were Shaun Carlson of ABC Readi-mix of Elverta, and Tom and Fayra Staas of Marysville. This year twelve Wheatland FFA students, exhibited a livestock animal at the Yuba-Sutter Fair and Livestock Auction. There were 6 project pigs exhibited; Kelsey Carreras, Kayla Chapman, Gianna Ford, Donovan McAdams, Stormy Sanford, and Bennett Whitley. Parrker Barnes, Joey Bishop, Trevor Bishop, and Samantha Wallace exhibited lambs. Wheatland FFA also had 2 goats shown at the fair, Nick Haluzak, and Brittni Rickards. All of the exhibitors competed in the area of showmanship and market with their animals. Bennett Whitley placed 1st in showmanship with his market hog; while Kelsey Carreras placed 6th. In the goat showmanship, Ren Burns placed 2nd overall, Brittni Rickards placed 3rd, and Nick Haluzak came in 8th. The students were also successful in their market classes, where the animals are judged on conformation, meat quality and cutability. Each project animal is placed in a weight class, according to the current weight of the animal on the day they check into fair. In their own respective weight classes, the students and their market hogs placed as follows; Kayla Chapman, Third, Donovan McAdams, Fourth, Kelsey Carreras, Fourth, Bennett Whitley, Fifth, and Gianna Ford, placed Seventh. In addition, Brittni Rickards placed 3rd with her market goat. Each student who enters an ag mechanics project or livestock animal, is also required to enter a FFA Record Book containing all of the information pertaining to hours spent on project, money invested, and FFA activities participated in. The following students placed with their record books: Ren Burns, First; Robert Chapman, Second; John Giles, Second; Garrett McAdams, Third; Trevor Haskell, Third; Jackson Whitley, Third; and Michael Bradshaw, Fourth. Much effort and time is dedicated to keeping records on these student projects. Joey Bishop, Trevor Bishop, Parrker Barnes, and Samantha Wallace all participated in raising and selling market lamb for the Yuba-Sutter. All of them did well in their market classes. Joey Bishop had the top FFA lamb in the carcass contest this year. All of the Wheatland FFA students would like to thank their individual buyers. Wheatland FFA would like to thank you for all the support of FFA and 4-H at the 2009 Yuba-Sutter Fair and Livestock Auction. |
