Learning to use the computer

Learnthat.com: FREE web training for computer courses.  As more and more people find themselves needing introductory materials that deal with all aspects of computer operation and the like, it's good to know that there are a number of websites that provide a nice range of basic tutorials in such matters. The folks at Learnthat.com have created just such a resource on this site, which includes basic tutorials for Microsoft Windows, XHTML, and on how to design a web page using Word. While the site itself doesn't contain a search engine, visitors can just scroll down the homepage to locate any tutorials that might be of interest. Teachers might also find the site helpful as they could easily place some of these materials on a projection device and have students follow along as they go through the tutorials as a class.

Additional Sites for Teachers

PBS Teachers, PBS' portal for pre-K-12 educators, offers a one-stop resource for educators searching for wide-ranging curriculum resources, video products (Shop for Teachers), online professional development opportunities (PBS TeacherLine) and more.  You will find thousands of free standards-based lesson plans, classroom activities, and interactive resources as well as hundreds of curriculum resources from local PBS stations — forming a local-national search, combining the best educational resources from around the country.

LearnOutLoud.com, an online portal for audio and video learning material, has launched what it calls the internet's largest directory of free educational audio and video content. This directory contains more than 500 free titles, including audio books, historical speeches, and university lectures. In addition to extensive links to free audio and video content - including collections of dozens of video lectures from MIT - LearnOutLoud.com says it has produced dozens of its own free audio titles for the directory. Examples of free audio books that can be downloaded from the site include Ralph Waldo Emerson's Self Reliance and James Allen's As a Man Thinketh. LearnOutLoud.com's catalog offers an extensive collection of nonfiction and classic fiction titles organized into categories such as business, language learning, and self-development. Audio guides to foreign-language courses and other subjects also are available.

Mediasite.com offers free, searchable presentations on thousands of topics
Sonic Foundry has created a web site that enables users to watch expert presentations on literally thousands of topics at no charge. Called Mediasite.com, the site is intended as a resource for journalists, educators, researchers, students, and just about anyone else looking for information on a variety of topics-everything from the treatment of contagious diseases, to Italian design, to virtual operating rooms. Users can search for information by keyword, and the clips all include audio, video, and rich presentation graphics. Users also can skip ahead to anywhere in the presentation with the click of a button. "Mediasite.com offers a glimpse into the future of web communications, where thousands of recorded presentations by experts of all kinds are captured, archived, and made publicly available, all from one centralized location," Sonic Foundry said. "The content is easily accessible through any web browser, without the need for downloads or plug-ins." At press time, the site included nearly 7,000 presentations created and submitted by universities, businesses, and government agencies. A search for the term "teaching" revealed 60 results, including presentations on formative assessment, teaching with online mentors, and best teaching practices for technology enhanced learning.

The Gateway to Education Materials (GEM) is a tool for teachers to access more than 40,000 educational materials such as lesson plans, instructional units, books and other relevant resources.  Resources can be browsed by subject, keyword, title and grade level.  Teachers can also access the ERIC database from here.

The Federal Resources for Educational Excellence (FREE) web site makes it easy to find teaching resources on federal government Web sites. The site was developed with the cooperation of more than 35 federal agencies and is updated each week with new materials and highlights.  FREE offers quick access to more than 1,500 resources in the arts, sciences, history and other subjects from the Library of Congress, National Archives, Smithsonian, NASA, the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies.

Lessonplanspage.com contains more than 2,500 free lesson plans that are available by grade level and subject.

Discovery School contains hundreds of free lesson plans as well as other resources that may be purchased.
